He said he had conveyed his decision on not contesting the election to the BJP central leaders.

Shankaramurthys term as member of the Legislative Council and consequently as chairperson ends in June. He has been elected to the House for five terms from the south west teachers constituency. He would, however, continue to be in public life and would take up any role assigned to him by the party after his term ends, Shankaramurthy said.

Shankaramurthy said he had discharged responsibilities given to him by the party honestly.
