Serial rapist ends life in jail

Serial rapist and murderer M Jaishankar (38) nicknamed Psycho Shankar committed suicide at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prisons in the early hours of Tuesday.

He slit his throat with a shaving blade that he procured during a haircut/shave within the jail premises, the police suspect.

The convict was kept in isolation in a separate cell as he posed a danger to fellow convicts, and he did not mingle with the other convicts, the police said.

Jaishankar slit his throat around 2.15 am, and was taken to the jail hospital soon after the night warden spotted him lying in a pool of blood.

He was then shifted to Victoria Hospital where he died around 5.15 am without responding to treatment.

Parappana Agrahara police have registered a case of unnatural death.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that Jaishankar slipped into depression and was under treatment at the jail hospital.

The police are also inquiring about visitors who met him in the jail to ascertain what could have led him to take the extreme step.

Fled from prison

In September 2013, Jaishankar had scaled the 30-foot wall of the high security prison with bedsheets and had escaped.

He fractured his back and leg and went into hiding at a slum near the central prisons from where he was arrested weeks later.

Jaishankar, who was serving a 10-year prison term, was a notorious habitual offender with cases in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

15 cases pending

He had around 15 cases of rape and murder pending at courts in Chennai, Dharmapuri, Hosur, Salem, Tirupattur, Bengaluru, Chitradurga, Hiriyur, Kadur, Molkalmur and Tumakuru police stations. He was convicted in three cases with 10-year sentences running concurrently, the police added.
