The BBMP is “grossly underusing” the 2,800-tonne garbage disposal unit built at a cost of Rs 800 crore, BJP legislator from Malleswaram, C N Ashwath Narayan, said on Friday.
Waste disposal at the unit is not even 7% of its capacity, he suggested and accused the BBMP of squandering the gains made from the segregation of garbage at source. “According to the BBMP, more than 60% of the waste generated in Bommanahalli, Dasarahalli and Yelahanka zones is segregated, but where is the remaining wet waste going,” he asked.
The MLA said the civic body spent Rs 13 per kg on garbage disposal, but the result was zero. The BBMP spends Rs 1,632 crore a year on garbage collection and disposal, he added.
