A conman posing as a politician cheated a city-based gold jeweller of Rs 94 lakh on the pretext of contesting in the upcoming assembly elections from Mysuru.
Dheeraj D N, who owns a jewellery shop in Basaveshwara Nagar 4th Block lodged a complaint on February 21 after he learnt that the man was actually a conman, the police said.
The accused, Somanna, is a native of Chitradurga and was introduced to Dheeraj in October 2017 by a common friend, Suraj, a businessman.
They remained in touch for months before Somanna made a proposal to Dheeraj in January 2018, claiming to be a prospective MLA candidate at a constituency in Mysuru. The proposal was to organise mass marriages in the run-up to the elections and that he would like to carry out business deals with him. Somanna placed orders for around 320 mangal sutras weighing five grams each, besides 20 gold biscuits weighing 20 grams each and 30 gold biscuits weighing 30 grams that were to be given as gifts to dignitaries attending the marriage.
Overwhelmed by the proposal, Dheeraj agreed and delivered the said gold to Somanna at a cafe in Sadashivanagar. Somanna promised to transfer the money online to Dheerajs account. To make Dheeraj believe, Somanna even carried photocopies of his property documents, PAN card and other documents claiming that he had applied for a loan and it was under process, the police said.
However, even after several days, Somanna did not transfer the money and continued to be elusive even over the phone, Dheeraj told the police. The victim then lodged a police complaint with the Basaveshwara Nagar police station and further investigations are underway.
