Bengaluru: Opposition leader in the Assembly and member of the selection committee Jagadish Shettar has reportedly refused to okay the appointment of former chief justice of Karnataka Dhirendra H. Waghela as chairman of Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (SHRC).
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had on January 8 announced the appointment of Justice Waghela as the chairman of the SHRC but according to sources, it has been vetoed by Mr Shettar for reasons best known to him-political or otherwise.
The selection committee for recommending the SHRC chairperson is headed by Siddaramaiah, and comprises of Speaker K.B. Koliwad, Council Chairman D.H. Shankaramurthy, Jagadish Shettar and Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy. The Governor appoints the chairperson of the Commission on the recommendations of the committee.
