Fire at govt hospital NICU; 29 babies rescued

The staff at the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of the district hospital in Tumakuru rescued 29 newborns after the air-conditioner caught fire on Friday evening.

The hospital staff sensed burning smell and pressed the fire alarm button around 7 pm. The personnel of the Fire and Emergency Services rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control.

An electrical short circuit is said to have caused the mishap.

Presence of mind on the part of Ramesh and Chikkasiddamma, who were attending on the babies at the NICU helped in shifting the babies to
safety, said district surgeon Dr Veerabhadraiah. A few others broke the glasses of the NICU to gain entry into it for putting off the fire.

“The babies have been shifted to Sridevi Institute Of Medical Sciences And Research Hospital and Siddaganga hospital,” deputy commissioner K P Mohan Raj said. “There are two units in the NICU. There were 10 babies in one unit, while the other had 19. I have directed Bescom authorities to conduct an enquiry and submit a report at the earliest,” the DC added.

MLA Dr Rafique Ahmed visited the hospital and took stock of the situation.
