Congress dares Modi govt to clarify stand on Karnataka flag

Congress on Friday dared the Modi government to spell out its stand on the Karnataka governments proposal to have a state flag.

“We want the Home Minister to clarify whether the Karnataka government has done anything wrong,” Randeep Singh Surjewala, chief Congress spokesperson, told reporters here.

Surjewala was asked to comment on Home Minister Rajnath Singhs reported remarks that the Centre had not received any proposal from the Karnataka government on a separate state flag.

Taking an aggressive stand, the Congress leader dared the Modi government to spell out whether it had divergent views on the issue of Kannada pride.

The Congress also accused the Modi government of adopting a step-motherly attitude towards Karnataka when it came to allocation of central funds.

By unveiling the state flag, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has once again introduced the Kannada pride issue in the debate ahead of the Assembly elections in May.

The Congress has been taking on emotive issues ahead of the elections, in a bid to corner the BJP which has not favoured a separate flag.

Siddaramaiah had also opposed moves to introduce Hindi signboards on the Bengaluru Metro.
