Bus accident claims eight lives, leaves 20 hurt

Eight people were killed and 20 others were injured, in a ghastly accident on highway number 75, Shantigram village, Hassan district, in the wee hours of Saturday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Bijo (26) of Belthangdi, Diana (20), Sonia (28), Rajesh Prabhu (26) of Dharmasthala, Gangadhar (55) of Bengaluru, driver Shivappa Chalavadi (45) and conductor Laxman (45). The eighth deceased is yet to be identified, police said.

The speeding bus carrying 40 people from Bengaluru to Dharmasthala turned turtle when the driver lost control and hit the divider near the Agriculture College.

Police said that the drivers negligence was the reason for the accident.

The bodies of the dead have been shifted to the district hospitals morgue and the injured have been admitted to the hospital for treatment.

Transport Ministers anxiety

Transport Minister H M Revanna has expressed shock for the accident that occurred at Shantigram on Saturday.

He has announced a relief of Rs 3 lakh for the kin of each of those who died in the accident.

He has also assured that all the medical expenses of the the injured who are being treated, will be footed by the government. He has directed senior officers to visit the spot.
