Bengaluru: One drizzle and power-cuts back

Bengaluru: Wednesday’s rain plunged several areas in the city into darkness for a couple of hours, leaving many unhappy with the sudden disruption in power supply.

People of Indiranagar, JB Nagar, Domlur, Koramangala, Banasawadi, Marathalli, Bellandur Seva Nagar, Ramamurthy Nagar, KR Puram, Hennur, Horamavu and surrounding areas went without  power from 7 pm to 9 pm and some areas had no power in the afternoon as well.

Grumbled Mr Mahesh Kumar, the owner of an eatery on 100 feet road in Indiaranagar, “Even a slight drizzle is enough to cause a disruption in power. This hampers our business. We cannot run an eatery for long durations on inverters and the UPS. There should be a system in place to make sure there is no sudden outage in power when it rains."

Ms Sheela Mohana, a resident of Banaswadi, fumed as the power cut affected her children’s preparation for their examinations. “It is unfair to have power cuts at this crucial time when our children are preparing for their exams. We waited frantically for the power to come back but it took two long hours. We just pray this does not repeat at the end of February and March, as the final exams will be on,” she added.

Bescom officials, when contacted, however, claimed that  the power disruption was caused by maintenance work and had been announced a week ago in areas like JP Nagar, Jayanagar, BTM second stage and their surroundings.

“If there is a system fault or failure, there is bound to be a power cut, but our men are always on the job to ensure this doesn’t take place,” they claimed.

Other Bescom officials claimed feeder faults at the  Mahdevapura and Domlur sub station had resulted in power interruption Wednesday evening. “The fault was rectified and corrected within an hour. But it took another hour to do more checks and ensure that the feeders were working properly,” they explained.
