Bengaluru: Lifestyle restaurant? Sucks life out of 13th Main in Indiranagar

Bengaluru: While the BBMP keeps assuring us that it is taking all measures to curb the commercialisation of residential areas, residents of 13th Main Indiranagar are worried as a lifestyle retail store is all set to be opened in a few days.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, the worried residents, who did not wish to be named, complained that an old residential building was demolished and rebuilt they had no clue that the whole building is set to be commercialised.

"All the construction work took place by entirely covering up the plot. Only after we residents felt something fishy is going to come up, we started to check out. We were shocked to know that a lifestyle retail store named 'Go Native', which has a branch in Jayanagar, is making its way into our residential area," a resident said.

Pointing out that it was a clear violation of the zonal regulation, the resident said, "The upcoming shop is sitting on a corner site at the junction of 13th Main and 2nd Cross. As per the zoning law, commercial units are barred in residential areas with roads that are less than 40 feet wide."

While shops under the ancillary usage can be set up on roads less than 40 feet, the proposed shop does not fit the category, residents complained and added, the entire property is all set to be commercialised and the first and second floor of the buildings would function as a paying guest accommodation.

That apart, they have no provision to park vehicles. The upcoming lifestyle store has plans to set up a cafe too on the same premises, which is sure to attract lots of cars and two wheelers. They will be parked haphazardly, block our way and peace of mind, they lamented.

When DC took up the issue with city Mayor Sampath Raj he asked the reporter to share the details of the upcoming commercial unit and assured that he shall take up the matter with BBMP Joint Commissioner (East) D.R. Ashok.

"We will not entertain anything which is illegal. Suitable action will be taken on this," Mayor assured.
