Bengaluru: DULT to pedal Cycle Day in other cities

Bengaluru: After holding Cycle Days successfully in Bengaluru, the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) is planning to take it to other parts of the state, especially smart cities.

A senior DULT official said, “We are planning to have Cycle Days in other cities in the state and this is the right time as these cities are still growing and we can start creating awareness from early stages. The cities and towns being considered are Hubballi-Dharwad, Tumakuru, Mangaluru, Shivamogga, Ballari, Davangere and Mandya. It is good if the cycling habit is inculcated in these places right away.”

He said, “The DULT is also starting a new project, Green Link, where a 5 km stretch is developed for walking and cycling. These model roads will be developed in cities that have City Municipal Councils. The concept proposal has been submitted to the cabinet. Once approved, we will shortlist the cities and start work in coordination with local municipalities.”

Another official said that it is necessary for the government to start creating awareness and educating people in other cities on the benefits of using bicycles instead of motor vehicles. “This will cut down air pollution and help people lead a healthy life. The Cycle Day is the right platform to start such an initiative,” he said.

In the city, the DULT has been getting a positive response to its Cycle Day initiative and has been receiving a number of applications from resident welfare associations to hold them in their respective areas. This proves that people are concerned about their environment, health and traffic congestion and want to use bicycles, an official said.
