Bengaluru: CID chargesheets Munirathna, 3 others in fake bills scam

Bengaluru: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has chargesheeted Rajarajeshwari Nagar MLA N. Munirathna Naidu and three others in the Rs 1,500 crore fake bills scam, which took place between 2008 and 2011 in the BBMP.

MLA Munirathna, who was a contractor then, is the accused number four in the chargesheet filed by the CID in February this year, while B.G. Prakash Kumar, then executive engineer, Y.M. Muniraju, then assistant executive engineer, and M.K. Harish, then assistant engineer, all from BBMP Malleswaram division, are the other accused.

The fake bills scam was related to civic works of Rs 1,500 crore that were taken up in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Malleswaram and Gandhinagar constituencies between 2008 and 2011. It was alleged that fake bills were raised by the contractors and BBMP officials for over 285 civic works.

The CID has charged Munirathna of swindling Rs 4.6 lakh by executing poor quality road works at Mathikere ward of Malleswaram division sanctioned in 2008-09.

Munirathna had approached a metropolitan magistrate on August 28, 2012 and was granted anticipatory bail. Two days later, he was granted regular bail when he appeared before the investigating officer. The three other accused too had obtained anticipatory bail.

Meanwhile, Munirathna has decided to challenge the chargesheet in the High Court, saying that the CID has erred in this case as he was a contractor for this work in 2008 and the BBMP gave him a clean chit in the case in 2010.
