Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Friday submitted to the High Court that the drive to remove illegal hoardings in public places is continuing and until now about 22,000 have been removed.

“About 95% of the task of removal of such hoardings on public properties has been accomplished and within next couple of days, the remaining ones shall be removed,” the Palike submitted.

As for the decision to ban advertisement display for a period of one year from August 6, 2018 by the BBMP, the court felt that it should properly ensure implementation of such a decision.

With respect to assault on officials during the removal of hoardings, the Advocate General informed the court that the result of investigation in the case registered in the Ramamurthy Nagar Police Station was filed on August 9 in the Court of the 10th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Mayo Hall, Bengaluru City.

The Palike pointed out that about 223 criminal cases, essentially for the offence under Section 3 of the Karnataka Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act, 1981, have been registered at different police stations in Bengaluru, between August 1 and August 8. Meanwhile, the Advocate General also filed a detailed affidavit of the Chief Secretary pointing out that he has carried out preliminary inquiry and found cases of dereliction of duty as also lack of supervision by officers. Further, Chief Secretary has also pointed out that steps are being taken now to rectify the defaults and to avoid recurrence in future.
