BBMP mulls Times Square in Bengaluru

The BBMP is looking into a proposal to develop Brigade Road-Residency Road Junction into Bengaluru Times Square, on the lines of the Times Square in New York.

The revamped area will be spread across the Sappers War Memorial and Opera House. Swathi Ramanathan of Janaagraha proposed the idea and has also submitted a detailed project report (DPR) to the BBMP.

Swathi told DH that the Square will be designed to hold large public gatherings. She, however, did not mention how large gatherings could be held at a busy junction.

Some features of the proposed Square include a clock tower that would celebrate and mark occasions such as New Year.

Besides, emphasis will be given to a detailed landscape design, including proper pavements and well-designed buildings. Earlier, while formally throwing open the remodelled Church Street, Bengaluru Development Minister K J George and Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy said that the government is keen on developing a Bengaluru Times Square at the junction.

BBMP officials told DH that the project is in its nascent stage, and development and execution will require more time.
